To add to my last post about the two routes to persuasion, this time I would discuss the second one. It relies on cues for a quick decision and is called the peripheral route. Those who are unmotivated and unable to scrutinize the message of the commercial will probably go through this path.

We are familiar to Rain’s latest commercial in CLEAR ( a shampoo brand ). Everybody seems to imitate his lines like “I love black” and “My name is Rain” which were all from the said commercial. Rain is considered as one of the hottest Korean actor this time and as all of us are aware, Filipino people love him for his role as ‘Justin’ in his Korean Novela ‘Fool House’. So when I first saw the advertisement, the impact is really effective. His image as ‘Justin’, superstar, singer, dancer, and a hunk who can make any girl drop dead with his presence did really get a good effect in persuading men to use the shampoo he is endorsing. He is seen a the ideal man most of men wish to be. And this we call, credibility.

Anyone can tell the difference if the endorser is a normal ‘balut vendor’ or a ‘taxi driver’ or imagine yourself endorsing that product.. except of course you have the looks and the character fitted to be its endorser.

But we all know that the attitude change made by this route is gone as quick as we had it. And since we just rely on specific cues to have a quick decision whether to buy the product or not, as soon as the commercial is over, the things we would remember is Rain doing his ‘rainy’ moves, his lines, and his English accent. And so as to cover up these disadvantages, the commercial is repeated again and again and again to remind the viewers to buy the product.

    Sunday afternoon commercials.

Since I am not a pig breeder, pig lover or whatsoever pig-attached person, this commercial won’t convince me to buy the product (I didn’t even pay any attention to its ramblings. .) But for my father– who was a farm boy, a hassler in cock-fighting and since time of memorial until he got married lived with pigs in their backyard– he would have listened to this comprehensively. And he would have shot me in the mouth because i turned it off. What’s boring for me, seems to be the only thing that matters in the world for him. Baffled.

And just as i am reminded by my long-due blog entry in our Communication Theory class, I over analyzed this bafflement. The goal of advertising is to influence people’s behavior. Everybody tries to find the best strategy or strategies to create an “attitude change” towards the target (the viewers). And according to Petty and Caciopo (1981), there are two routes towards persuasion —- the central and the peripheral routes. I see the above commercial takes the central route to persuasion. Since it is aired every Sunday afternoons, I could say that they know their viewers and the informations discussed on the commercial is central to its viewers. Sunday is the common “rest day” in works. And in ‘barrios’ or in family with a ‘pig’ business in homes, afternoon is the break for the day after doing some ‘pig-feeding’ or ‘pigpen-cleaning’. The time to relax. The time to turn-on the TV. And these kind of people are the ones who see this commercial everyday of their afternoon TV watching. That is also why, it is common to adults or anyone who stays at home everyday to talk about “Wowowie” or “Eat Bulaga”.

Back to the topic. Since the said commercial is central to its viewers, the viewers are motivated to analyze and comprehend the informations given. And this may lead to either persuasion or resistance to the merits of the advocacy presented. The attitude changes brought by this route is permanent and could affect people’s behavior and how they see things.

Dear Jim,

Wait, I am not a friend. so you may or may not continue reading. But wait (again), we really need to talk.

Okay, I would understand if since time of memorial you’ve been hearing tales of a man and a woman who fell in love with each other and remain as that ‘in love’ for a lifetime. But if you wish to, also, live that kind of ‘happily-ever-after’ love story, then you’re living the wrong world Jim. There is no Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty or whoever fairytale character here.

To make you see things clearly, let us look at your situation in a relational dialectics perspective. “Bonding occurs in both interdependence with the other and independence from the other. And too much connection destroys the relationship for the individual identities are lost.”

It may seems so contradictory that Shelley discloses almost everything about her but then there comes this overprotected diary she keeps away from you. And now, you think of it as detrimental to your relationship. The tension between you and Shelley, the opposing pulls towards openness and closedness are experiences not only by you but all Jims’ and Shelleys’ who are in a relationship. And this contradiction, according to the said theory, is inevitable. And if accepted that it is, actually, a fact of life, it can be constructive.

So if she wants her privacy, give her. Anyway, you might need it for yourself sometime. Too much disclosure is dangerous. You may share your opinions and emotions to a person to create trust and rapport between both of you. You may also want to share your life story. But to apply the social penetration theory, there are things and informations about you that if you share to another person would affect the way you see each other. And that would ruin what you have established. We can never let anyone enter our very core if we want a good and lasting relationship. If ever, we would lose our identity.

And actually, the problem here is not her being so overprotective to that diary but you, giving meaning to it. Cool down bro. Good luck.<=

—————————————————————————————————————————–

And to Ms. Shelley,

If you don’t have any plan to let Jim read that diary, what’s the point of announcing its existence? And I think you must have listened to him, maybe then you will understand why he acted that way. I am not telling you to give what he wants but at least, understand him. Tell him you’re side…constructively.

Thank you for reading. <=

The Art of PLayboying

(the relationship of Constructivism to effective Attraction Power)

OVERVIEW:

In this study, there will be a comparison between the two types of people according to Delia’s Constructivism Theory—people with large set of interpersonal comstructs and people with less— in terms of attracting people.

SIGNIFICANCE

This study aims to test the claim of Delia’s Constructivism that:

1. “People with a large set of interpersonal constructs have better social perception skills than those whose set of mental templates is relatively small.”(Griffin, 2006)

2. “Cognitively complex people have a definite advantage in forming an impression than those who are not. As it is said in Walther’s Social Information Processing Theory, “impression formation is the crucial first step in relational development.” ( Griffin, 2006)

CALENDAR OF ACTIVITIES:

JAnuary 22 – research about Constructivism

January 24 – research about Power and Attraction

Pea-cocking. Sweet words. pick-up lines. Playboyship is an art.

We knew a lot of them. Some, given the gift of physical attractiveness associated with communication power and confidence to close it, are perceived to have a magnetic power over women. Some, though they really really want to be one… poor guys, they always fail. Oh please! Magic has nothing to do with this. The ability to attract doesn’t need Fairy Godmother’s wand. You’ll be surprised how easy it would be. Just of course, don’t let your target read this. haha.

GETTING HER

We build fear towards the opposite gender. Males and females have different body parts and brain chemistry. We feel unfamiliar to their thoughts, feelings and actions. And so often, we feel self-conscious. We are ashamed of our own “self”.

Try to imagine yourself going skydiving. You can’t skydive… Of course you can! It’s just that in this likely situation, you experience conflict between your subconcious fear (fear of height and danger) and your rational mind saying “Is this fear rational? I have safety belts, there are people to assist me. I will be okay after all.” You just have to fool that subconcious fear and there is nothing you cannot do.

Everyone is worried of how they are perceived. Convince yourself that you do not care of the outcomes of your actions. Stop thinking you cannot pursue a woman. Stop thinking you’ll appear fool. It only takes a bit of theater. If you can pretend to be confident, you will be perceived to be confident. Pretend to be whatever you wish to be. Pretend to smart. Pretend to be elegant. Act as if that’s reality, and it will. Really.

In that way, you could date anyone, even the president herself. *grins*

DARE

Try to establish eye contact with a woman. While maintaining this contact, give her a nice smile. Do this to as many women you can.

SIMILARITY or COMPLEMENTARY?

We often hear it, “people of the same feather, flock together” but some also argues that “opposite attracts”. So where should we really stand?

I asked a “playboy” friend if similarities in physical appearance and personality with your own are important in choosing your target. “No”, he said. “In fact, we need not choose at all. If I try to flirt with a girl and there is no sign of resistance, then that’s it”, laughing. “But of course the relationship wouldn’t last”, he added.

If we try to observe dating couples around the park, we would notice that these people are the ones with similar level of attractiveness, in terms of physical features or in personality. If there are relationships with one’s attributes superior to the other, then there must be a factor or factors which compensates the other’s inferiority. Examples of these are power, money and intelligence. With this, we could theorize that you could be attracted to a person with superior or equal level of attractiveness with yours, but never to those inferior. Relationship could only be possible if there’s a factor compensating this inferiority.

And to justify what my friend said, similarity in attitude can predict the success of a relationship. People similar in attitude will likely be more attracted to each other over time, whereas the opposite will have a less attraction over time.
